Influence of World War II on the Winter Olympics

Influence of World WarBetween 1924 and 1940, the Winter and Summer Olympic Games grew in popularity. Numerous countries stepped forward to host the 1940 Winter Olympic Games and there came a point when the International Olympic Committee was pampered with numerous options. The city of Sapporo in Japan was selected to host these games, which brought great joy to the Japanese citizens.

However, the host city lost its opportunity to host the games following the Japanese invasion of China in the year 1938. Following the decision to move the Winter Games out of Japan, the International Olympic Committee was left in a dilemma. Hence, it decided to appoint St. Moritz, once again, as the host city for the 1940 Winter Olympics as it had done an excellent job 12 years back. But luck evaded the IOC once again and they had to withdraw their decision because of some tiffs with the Swiss Organizing Committee. Numerous other cities like Garmisch-Partenkirchen offered to host the games again, but the Summer and Winter Olympics of 1940 were cancelled because of Germany’s invasion of Poland. The following Winter Olympics that were supposed to be held in the year 1944 were also cancelled in 1941 because of the seemingly endless World War.

After the Second World War was concluded in the year 1945, the International Olympic Committee began looking for cities to host the 1948 Winter Olympics. Switzerland, being a neutral country in the war, seemed an ideal choice and hence, St. Moritz became the first city to host the Winter Olympic Games twice. 28 countries were represented in these games by their respective athletes. However, no player from Japan or Germany was invited for these games.

The 1948 Winter Olympics is still famous for its controversial incidents. 2 Ice Hockey teams from the United States came to St. Moritz for the games and both claimed to be the official American representatives. The Olympic Flag which was presented at the Antwerp Summer Olympics in 1920 was stolen. The thieves did not spare the replacement too and as a result, there was utter chaos during the progress of these games.
