Usain St. Leo Bolt, known to the world as Usain Bolt, is a sprinter from Jamaica and a 3-time gold medalist in the Olympics and the World Championships. He holds 2 solo world and Olympic records, one each in the 100 meters and 200 meters sprint. He also holds a world and Olympic record in the 4X100 meter relay along with his Jamaican teammates.
Before 2008, Bolt was a relatively unknown name in the field of Athletics. It was in the beginning of the year 2008, that Bolt shattered the world record for the 100 meter sprint by finishing in 9.72 seconds. The 2008 Beijing Olympics witnessed Bolt shattering his own world record and the prevalent Olympic record when he finished in 9.69 seconds. He also broke the world and Olympic records for the 200 meter sprint at the same event, finishing with a time of 19.30 seconds. Bolt went on to help his national team set the world record for the 4X100 meter relay, finishing in 37.10 seconds. He became the first player after Carl Lewis to win 3 gold medals in single Olympics and the only one to break the previous world records in each of those events.
Oddly enough, just when it seemed that Bolt had set unbreakable records in the 100 meters and 200 meters sprint, he bettered his own record at the World Championships in the year 2009. His 100 meters timing was 9.58 seconds and his 200 meter timing was 19.19 seconds. Hence, he became the first athlete ever to hold the 100 meters and 200 meters titles for the Olympics and the World Championships at the same time. These seemingly superhuman efforts and accomplishments have resulted in him being fondly called “Lightning Bolt” by the media and by fans all over the world. He is also known to have won the IAAF World Athlete of the Year Award, Laureus Sportsman of the Year Award and the Track & Field Athlete of the Year Award.
